Learn about the different parts of books

TODAY’S PLAY: Build book awareness and bring the story to life as you read with your little one.

Ask your child to grab a book they would like to read with you.

Discuss the various parts of the book: the front cover, the back cover, and the spine. Introduce the author and the illustrator, explaining that the author writes the story and the illustrator creates the pictures. As you read, ask your child to look for different parts of the story happening in the illustrations, and turn the pages for you.

Dive deeper by asking your child to act out various parts of the story. What would it look like to huff and puff and blow the house down?

Why This Matters

Reading together

"Study after study shows that early reading with children helps them learn to speak, interact, bond with parents and read early themselves, and reading with kids who already know how to read helps them feel close to caretakers, understand the world around them and be empathetic citizens of the world."
